My Crazy Lost Theory

Lost Theory

I know this might come off as way into left field but I have a theory about Lost. This theory is unlike anything else I’ve ever heard anyone suggest. Actually, no other theory is even remotely like it and that’s what makes me think it is just too bizzare to be real. But I'm going to tell you anyways.
First off, I think what makes Lost so appealing to so many people is that it is seemingly normal people in a very unnormal (and not to mention supernatural) experiences. What Lost strives at is making these very unbelievable things happen to the castaways and having them deal with it in a realistic way along with the show giving us a semi-realistic explanation of these events. Going along with Lost’s need for reality, the show started putting up fake commerials for The Hanso Corporation and with that many accompaning faux websites. What is exceptional about these commericals and websites is that they are set up to look like they are real. There is no mention about the show Lost, ABC, or any other things that would make you believe that this isn’t a real website/commerical.
After the end of season two, Lost went one step further by making The Lost Experience (or TLE). What the creators of Lost did with TLE is that they created a Lost world for TV viewers to get wrapped up in until season three started. The producers went a step father than the commericals and websites and now had viewers go to different websites to collect clues that were left behind by a woman named Rachael Blake. Supposedly Rachael is the daughter of Alvar Hanso and is trying to investigate the Hanso Foundation because she claims it is corrupt and doing very bad things. Rachael Blake is the narrator for TLE and people who got involved listened to her podcasts, went to her websites, pieced together video clips, read her blogs and watched her personal videos from around the world just to learn bits of information about the show Lost. It seemed like the producers of Lost wanted people to get involved with the show and get wrapped up into it. So much so that they start to forget what was part of the show and what was “reality” on The Lost Experience. So, basically, what you have is a television show that is obviously just a show. Then you have TLE which is also a “show” but presents itself as reality.
The other day I was reading something on lostpedia.com about The Lost Experience and how the show is presented as present date. This is solidified by the apperance Rachael Blake made at the Comic Con convention last summer when she got up from the crowd and started shouting at the actors and producers of Lost and how they are doing a “cover up” for the Hanso Foundation. She said that the show Lost was letting them get away with awful things by pretending that the Hanso Foundation is a fictional organization on the show when in “reality” it is a group of people who are bent on doing some very impactful things to the future of mankind. The other thing we know is that it is sometime in October 2004 on the TV show. So, that means there is a two year gap between the show and TLE. What is interesting about that is that we have heard from the producers of Lost numerous times that the time on the Island may not be the same as the time we (the viewer) are used to.
So, finally, here is my whacked out theory. What if time on the island is equal to the episodes that we (the viewer) watches? What I mean is, at the end of the first season the castaways had been on the island for just over 40 days, but in the viewers world months had passed from the beginning of the season to the end of it. By the end of season 2 of Lost just over two months had past by for the castaways, but for the viewers two whole years had gone by. Now the producers have stated that they know how the show is going to end and what direction it is going in. They have stated that it will probably run about five or six seasons. So, what if on the very last episode of the last season (we’ll say in 2010) the cast of Lost returns home and the show is live. By that I mean they come off a boat (or whatever) and run to meet their television family in the year 2010. In the show Lost, the characters may have only been away from the civilized world a year or two (which would make it 2005 or 2006), but on the last episode when they come back home they are back in our time, 2010. Wouldn’t this be the ultimate way to bring Lost, the show, with Lost, the Experience? There are websites and commericials on today about the Hanso Foundation, but the television show takes place two years ago and as the seasons go on, there will be a bigger and bigger gap between these. This theory would go along with the fact that Lost is trying to make itself appear more and more real. Why are they doing this? Who knows? Maybe to prove a point that what the Hanso Foundation is trying to pull off is not really that sci-fi. Maybe there are real organizations like that are doing/going to do/could do what Hanso is doing on the show. All in all, if this is what Lost is trying to do it would have to be the first time that a show ever tried to make its viewers believe that what they were watching wasn’t on a soundstage. It was all real. The castaways really were on a mysterious island where time was different than ours and they fought against The Others, The Hanso Foundation and themselves during that period. People really did die there and people really were born. This is idea is sooo far out, I know, but once it crossed my mind I wasn’t able to get rid of it.

We didn't get a chance to watch Lost last night so I assume I shouldn't read your post.

Hopefully, we'll see it tonight, at which point I'll read and respond to your theory, Tim.

So would this scenario be in line with what you're saying?

In 2003/4 the Hanso corporation started to have major problems with their secret Dharma project. The problems were significant enough (e.g., a rip in the time/space continuum) that they worried about their project leaking to the public.

In the ultimate act of preemption and arrogance, a Hanso representative approached JJ Abrams and other TV producers with their pitch for the big-budget Lost television show. Their thinking being that if they fictionalize their project, people will not criticize their company since the public will assume that their company doesn't exist. In essence they've figured out the ultimate way of keeping a secret: putting it on tv, ads, and websites where nobody believes anything!

There are whistle blowers like Rachael Blake, but whereas without the show, she'd be listened to and people would investigate what she's claiming, instead she's ignored and seen simply as a clever TLE ploy by ABC.

When the show finally ends, the two worlds will collide. Rachael will be vindicated, and the people trapped in the Dharma project mishaps of 2003/4, will finally be revealed when castaways are brought back into the fabric of our time.

Yeah that sounds right. I hadn't thought of the backstory of HOW Lost and Hanso got incorporated but your idea sounds just as good as anything I can think of. And yes, the shows finally will be just as you explained. Glad you were able to get that. I wasn't sure if it made any sense in anyone else's mind.

I didn't really get what Tim was getting at, but with Eric's summary it makes sense. I like it! Wouldn't that be the ultimate Aha moment on TV. I love it!!! you're genius!
