Most expensive greenlight ever?

Well, it looks like the director's whose speed of production as of late makes Lucas's 10 years between Indy 3 and the first Star Wars prequel look like Joel Schumacher on the Phonebooth set, has finally inked a deal and will, in fact, actually make a movie for the real world (his Aquaman movie doesn't count in my book :-)

From Entertainment Weekly:

The movie is likely to be one of the most technically complex productions ever mounted, as it will make extensive use of cutting edge 3-D, computer animation, and motion capture f/x technology. And by the time it arrives in theaters in the summer of 2009, the movie might be one of the most expensive movies ever made; Fox is said to have greenlit the film at $200 million.

What's Avatar all about? According to previously published reports, it's an original screenplay penned by Cameron that follows a battle-scarred war vet who travels to another planet inhabited by an alien race with a distinctly different language and culture from Earth. Conflicts ensue.

Cameron begins shooting Avatar in April.

I'm glad that he's doing another movie. I'm also glad that it's sci-fi because those movies are hard to make and here is one guy we know can make a great film. The only thing is...you know that it won't be $200. It's going to be more like $300-350. Can't wait!
