A Cult Following: Snakes on A Plane....Discuss
Why is there a cult following for Snakes on a Plane before the movie has come out? There are no critic reviews for it on metacritc.com but 39 people have voted to give it a 9.4 rating. What's up with that?! Why are people excited about this movie at all. I first thought they were excited because it was going to be the ultimate B-movie, but the trailer is marketing it as an actual horror film. Is this really happening? Did Entertainment Weekly really give this movie the cover two weeks ago? We can't wait to see how it does. Anyone who goes to this movie is going just to see how awful it is. Except for the people who are following the cult and they are doing it because they know it's going to be the shittiest movie ever. Are people going to pay $10.00 to see this movie on a Friday night just because they know it going to be awful when they could actually see a film they'd like? That's the question. It is 3:00 on Tuesday morning and this is the question that Nicole and I are pondering.

First, you should have named this thread: Snakes on a blog...no wait, New Line has already used that name for one of their many "fan-based" Internet sites (http://www.snakesonablog.com/).
NPR ran a story on the Internet "buzz" back in March (see http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=5298003)
About that time Poland recommended that New Line bump the release of SoaP up to early summer so to capitalize on the buzz, foolishly thinking that New Line couldn't possibly maintain a high level of manufactured buzz until it's late-summer release date. Well, six months later SoaP still has tons of buzz and positive screenings.
Poland was quick to note that The Real Cancun had great screening results and still tanked.
I think the film will probably do well because it's a T&A flick that has a lot of press coverage. Sadly, guys will flock to see it, because what else is out there?
Yeah, there aren't too many movies out right now and there really won't be until September. I just can't believe that people are talking about this movie. It looks sooooo awful!!!
I heard a guy wrote a book on the "Internet buzz" surrounding the movie...an entire book!
I know the guy is crazy since he was quoted as saying, Other studios should take note of New Line's savy response to Internet buzz. Moviegoers can smell artifical buzz a mile away and they don't like it.
LOL! If SoaP isn't artifically generated buzz, I don't know what is. I think New Line did an amazing job on this too, but it's not for avoiding artificial buzz...it's for creating it!
why are we even talking about this movie? The name says it all...Snakes on a Plane. Who cares! It looks, sounds, and will be horrible! forget the buzz...speaking of buzz...Bees on a plane would have been maybe just maybe a slightly cooler idea! At least then it would have worked as a B-movie (sorry-just had to!)
$15M for the weekend...that's not good. It's amazing how well the traditional print and broadcast media messed this up. They hyped something that wasn't there at all. You called it, Erin. Who cares.
