Eric's 2006 Top Ten Movies

  • Stranger Than Fiction
  • Departed
  • V for Vendetta
  • Prestige
  • Apocalypto
  • Rocky Balboa
  • United 93
  • Cars
  • Children of Men
  • Lady in the Water

  • ed: 1-8-07
    • added Children of Men
    • re-evaluated Prada based on input from Tim
    • re-evaluated Prestigue based on current conversations.
    • sought reasonable means to take Tim's advice and place M:i:iii in my 2006 Top Ten...but a recount of the number of films I saw this year confirmed that I did see at least 11 films and therefore it's impossible for M:i:iii to be on my Top Ten.
    • "Little Miss Sunshine just missed the list...it's number 11.
Ann, on the other hand, has only seen 11 films, so her Top Ten will include two of the following titles: M:i:iii, Pirates, or X3. So, Tim, you may want to start your lobbying against X3 now...that's your best bet.

    The Prestige

I just finished the book and absolutely loved it. Loved it! One of the best of 2006. I have heard it is a little different than the movie though. But, I have also heard from people who saw the movie without reading the book, that it was great!! So, now that I am done reading I am excited but hesitant about seeing the movie. I don't want to wreck the book OR the movie. This is such a dilema!!

    Going for the Trifecta

Well, Vendetta was a darn good movie, but based on reviews from Dad and Tim, it looks like I might be on the verge of seeing three movies in a row, each with the potential to be the best movie of the year.

A couple weeks ago I saw The Departed...which was awesome.
On Wednesday Ann and I are going to see the Prestige...a movie currently sitting on top to Tim's Best of 2006 list.
Then two weeks after that I'm going to Borat with Tim (and Erin?)...which as of right now is the best-reviewed movie since Fellowship of the Rings.

Three movies in a row! That's awesome. What movie could I possible see after that run to keep the ball rolling?

    EW.com Review: The Prestige

This makes the movie sounds pretty promising. They give it a B+, raising it's metacritic score to 60.

Entertainment Weekly's EW.com | Movie Review: The Prestige: "We think of magic as puckish, elegant, lighter than air, but in The Prestige, an aggressively devious sleight-of-hand thriller directed by Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins), the magic, even at its most clever, is powered by currents — sometimes literal ones — of electricity and danger. In the Victorian age of high magic showmanship, a woman gets dunked with a violent splash into a glass tank, and it's far from preordained that she'll ever get out. A man makes a bird vanish by smashing its cage; a bullet catcher asks a ruffian in the crowd to fire a gun at him, and the trick turns out to be as hazardous as it sounds. Then there's the enigmatic silver sphere, invented by Thomas Edison's rival Nikola Tesla, that shoots off white bolts of Frankensteinian voltage, teleporting a top hat (or a person) from one place to the next. Magic or technology? Either way, The Prestige wants to fool your senses by ripping a hole in reality. We think of magic as puckish, elegant, lighter than air, but in The Prestige, an aggressively devious sleight-of-hand thriller directed by Christopher Nolan (Batman Begins), the magic, even at its most clever, is powered by currents — sometimes literal ones — of electricity and danger.
